Short Fiction

It occurred to me that now that I have a spiffy new site, I can keep track of my shorter fiction pieces as well. A few are finished (but need rewriting); a few are barely sketches at this point. The majority are partially written. I’ll update it from time to time as I finish/revise them.

At first, he disregards it as a practical joke, but over the next several days, many similar events occur, getting his attention. Working Title: Horror Story
Genre: Horror
Mood: Dark, Comic, Drama
Length: 8820
Status: Not Complete
Explanation: There was this challenge in the alt.folklore.ghost-stories Usenet group many moons ago. The challenge: write a genuinely scary ghost story. I came up with all kinds of ideas and got this far in just setting up the characters and their relationships and letting a few weird things happen when…it dawned on me that I don’t know what “genuinely scary” actually means. Because I’m not very easy to scare. So…it’s a “trunk novel” that isn’t like to go anywhere, but just in case I ever pick it back up…

Title: Witness Protection
Genre: Science Fiction
Mood: Dark, Adventure, Time Travel
Length: 2314
Status: Not Complete
Summary: Jason and Vanna Weatherby are the sole witnesses to what seems a “routine” crime, but soon discover that what they saw was something far more sinister. And deadly. In order to protect them from the criminals who now want them dead at all costs, the Witness Protection Program sends them to the one place they can’t be found: the past. Or can they?

Title: AIDS++
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Mood: Dark, Religious
Length: 2021
Status: Complete
Summary: Greg Thomas has a disease no one has ever seen before. His doctors can’t cure it; they can’t even identify it. In the last hours of his life, a presence makes itself known, claiming to be the Archangel Gabriel, and informs him that he is the instrument by which God will bring about the end of the world.

Title: The Inheritance
Genre: Fantasy
Mood: Light, Witches
Length: 850
Status: Not Complete
Summary: This is little more than a vignette that came from a “what if?” idea I came up with. A grandmother passing on her book of Magyck (yes, spelled like that) to her young granddaughters, much to their mother’s disapproval.

Title: Death Stalking
Genre: Fantasy
Mood: Dark, Death
Length: 1835
Status: Complete
Summary: A young man is called to meet a friend in a bar late one night. His friend tells him that he is being hunted by Death. At first he doesn’t believe him. At first.

Title: Return to Earth
Genre: Science Fiction
Mood: Hard Science, Darkish, Ecological
Length: Unknown
Status: Not Complete
This is the only work I have written and then lost, whether that’s because of accidental deletion, purposeful destruction, or hard drive crash, I don’t know.

Summary: A ship of humans descended from the last survivors to abandon the no-longer-habitable Earth return to the home planet to recolonize, and find it very changed.

Title: Like Magic
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Mood: Light
Length: 2732
Status: Not Complete
Summary: A magician-type who also happens to be either a private investigator or a government agent of some sort is looking for…something of immense power…that is located somewhere in an apartment complex. To gain access, he decides to pose as the handy-man so he can search for…it…unmolested.

Yeah, it’s not very well-defined. I sort of just fell in love with the ideas that this story sparked. Ideas that later became my in-progress novels Perdition’s Flames and Death Scene (see top of screen and right sidebar for links to excerpts from both).

Title: Designer Genes
Genre: Science Fiction
Mood: Glossary Story
Length: 947
Status: Complete
A “glossary story” consists of the glossary entries for a world, but these entries “tell the story” in and of themselves. Author Suzette Haden Elgin had two of them (here and here) on her LiveJournal, which is what sparked my interest in doing one. I’m not 100% sure what to do with it, but I’m told by quite a few people that they’d like to read the story from which this glossary comes. :)

Working Title: Werewolf Project
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Mood: Good question
Length: 2353
Status: Not Complete
I have wanted to write a story about werewolves on Mars for a long time. And this is my attempt to do so. It’s stalled because…how does one make a story about werewolves on Mars interesting? I’ll let you know when I figure it out. :)

Working Title: Chain Story Submission
Genre: Fantasy
Mood: Adventure
Length: 5070
Status: Not Complete
I mention the Chain Story elsewhere on the site, so I won’t go into detail, here. My writing group on Second Life has the opportunity to submit stories for inclusion in it, to be reviewed by Mike Stackpole. I decided to try writing a werewolf story with more traditional werewolves (i.e., not sexy), but the twist is: the main character (who is a werewolf) is able to find a cure for his affliction.

Title: The Surrogate
Genre: Science Fiction
Mood: Dark, Psychological
Length: 4183
Status: Not Complete
The idea came to me while watching an episode of Ellen. Her guest was John Travolta. He said something to the effect of this: “Everyone is so busy these days that you practically have to pay someone to live your life. ‘Here’s $40! Go have fun for me.'” There was an almost audible click, and a story popped almost fully formed into my head. I’ve spent years trying to write it down, but get bogged down in the details.

I’ve written many more words on this, including one complete version that got to something like 23,000 words, but…I can’t find it anywhere on my hard drive. Gah!

Working Title: Fatal Allure
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Mood: Dark
Length: Idea Phase
Status: Not Even Started
This is the third book in my urban fantasy world. The story will have something to do with a bad guy with the power to draw power from artwork. It sounds kind of goofy, right now, but I haven’t really fleshed out anything, yet. :)

Working Title: Nick’s Story
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Mood: Dark
Length: Idea Phase
Status: Not Even Started
I have an idea to write a short story set in the same world as my urban fantasy novels, but earlier. It tells the story of how the main character, Nick Damon, came to discover his powers, and the consequences thereof.
